Why I Started Blogging + FAQ Blogging Questions

5:00 PM

Hello all! I hope you guys have been doing well! Today I wanted to let you guys in on how I feel about the blogging process behind the scenes. I feel like it is really important to hear from the horses mouth about the pros and cons of what we do and why we do what we do. For individuals who want to start a blog it will either inspire you or deter you. For individuals who are just plain nosy (like me) and want to be in the know, here is the inside scoop!

I started blogging in 2014. That is when I created The Strong Suit and made a blogging account. Shortly after, I transferred to a new school and completely fell off the map. I picked things back up about a year later and I have been blogging ever since. So I kind of claim 2015 as my real starting year since that is when I began to take things seriously, but I guess I will let you guys decide! Let's back up a little bit though. When I started college in 2012 I was placed in classes with some of the most talented people I have ever met. Every morning we would come in with out Starbucks and talk about what we saw on style.com, who left what company, and what ever other fashion news we could get our hands on. When I abruptly had to take a semester off, I did not have access to those morning talks anymore so I took it upon myself to stay in the know. I created my blog to be a space where I can help other artistic people stay up to date on the current trends and happenings in the fashion industry. I also wanted to showcase all of the talent I was exposed to from individuals my age, who were owning their own companies and making a difference. A few years later I am still writing about fashion from my point of view, collaborating with dope brands, and being able to show off the young entrepreneurs who will change the world. I love every minute of it!

Annnnnnnd just in case you were wondering I am wearing a pink blush dress I purchased from Ross for $8 and Moon and Lola's Papaya earrings in the color Blush as well. If you decide you love the earrings so much you have to have them, make sure that you use my discount code AALSTON10 to get 10% off of your purchase! Below I have some FAQ that I get about blogging, hopefully this can give you guys the backstage access every reader desires to know about their favorite blogger:

How did you come up with the name The Strong Suit, what does it even mean?

I get this question ALL the time and I am surprised it has taken me several years to finally come out and explain it. So it literally took me like two whole months to come up with the name for my personal style blog. I am a pretty impatient person and I was right on the brink of just settling for a name, thinking that I could change it later (terrible idea). When one day I was going through a list common sayings and phrases, and came across strong suit. Most of the time when we hear these words used it is in a negative connotation. For example, math is not my strong suit (it is not I hate it). We use it to explain the things we are NOT good at. I decided to put a spin on it and title it strictly The Strong Suit, because fashion IS my strong suit. It is something in which I consider myself talented. So I hope you see what I did there (dun dun cha)!

What do you love the most about blogging?

I know it sounds cliche but fashion is seriously my passion (lol). I have ALWAYS known that I wanted to be part of the fashion industry somehow and helping people gain knowledge about different products and providing them with styling tips really makes me happy. I love when my family and friends ask me to help them with a specific outfit for a special occasion, or just because. It is something I am really passionate about and I take my blog very seriously.

What is the most annoying thing about blogging?

I think the MOST annoying thing about blogging is being expected to do everything for free. I really do not believe that some companies understand the work and creativity that goes behind a single blog post. In the simplest instance, I will have to hire a photographer (that I will pay), find an appropriate location to show off the styled outfit, edit the pictures, write the blog post, rewrite and edit the blog post, and finally put everything together. That takes time and effort and we are providing them publicity, most of us have strong followings which is why they want to work with us in the first place. It only seems fair!

The second most annoying thing about blogging is the trial and error of finding a nice support group. The blogging industry is so over saturated it is ridiculous, and sometimes people act really strange, and by strange I mean standoffish. My ideology is if I am successful everyone in my circle anyone who befriends me or simply has a question will be. Whenever my blogger friends have questions about how to do this or that I never hold back, because at the end of the day they will support me and I will support them. Smart bloggers know that helping others also helps themselves. People will not hesitate to promote you and read your blog when you do the same for them. Having a closed fist means you can't receive any blessings.

Who are some of your favorite bloggers?

I absolutely love Mattie James, Aimee Song, Sazan Hendrix, and Whitney aka Naptural85 on youtube! I have followed them before they were well known, married, or had kids. I really go through their blogging journeys with them and I feel like I have learned so much, from their triumphs and mistakes. I definitely think it is important to have bloggers you can look up to and learn from. I love each of their styles and how transparent they are about what goes on in their lives. Being in the limelight on social media can be tiring sometimes, but being able to balance your real life and who everyone sees on your blog is an imperative talent any successful blogger must posses. They are truly amazing!

Where do you see yourself in five years with The Strong Suit?

I definitely will be full time in five years and blogging will be my full profession. I plan on collaborating and working with bigger names by then, especially department stores. I would even love to have my own collection of clothing designed by me (I saw a youtuber do it so I know I can too). I just want to be happy, traveling, and living a blessed life!

What are some items that you are currently obsessed with?

I am currently in love with press on nails! If you have been paying close attention you will have noticed them in a few of my past posts. They are so easy and perfect for someone like me who loves to change up their look pretty often. I am also loving shoes lately. Not any specific brand but I have about 7 pairs of shoes that I want to style for the blog, all that I purchased for under $20 ( I know right)! So make sure you stay tuned for those! The last thing would have to be graphic tees. I realize this past weekend that my graphic tee game was extremely weak. I want to display more of my laid back and athleisure style so I am always on the hunt for new ones!

What areas of fashion would you like to include in The Strong Suit's content?

That is easy, interior styling and fitness style for sure. One of my good friend's is actually starting a fitness blog which made me start thinking more about what I wear to the gym and why. I also work at a sneaker store, so I am always around cute fitness clothes and I have decided I am going to take my gym wardrobe a little more seriously, but like with everything one step at a time.

It's not picture perfect, but you get the picture still! Thank you all for reading and supporting my blog it means so much to me. I love you all! Below I have linked a similar dress and several different accessories in case you loved the look and wanted to try something like it. Once again thank you for coming with me on my journey!
