3 Ways to Make Your Old Habits Work For You

The new year is usually met with a lot of expectations. Everyone is getting their New Years resolutions together and planning out the activities they hope to start and the habits they plan to break. I had planned to hit the ground running with my blog this year with upcoming collaborations and a full editorial calendar, and then boom, I had an unexpected death in my family. I must admit I lost all motivation to write and create all of the fun things I had originally planned for you guys because I didn’t feel it. All of that enthusiasm and energy was now being used for healing and encouraging my loved ones. As a result, the usual guilt set in with thoughts like:

"I haven’t created any content yet this year (it’s literally only been twenty something days), I am behind. What if I create this content and things don’t go as planned. What if all the content I have created goes to waste and ends up outdated? Will my personal sadness creep into my blog posts because I don’t want that!"

It was in this moment that I had to reflect on the three things that 2018 taught me, what I was leaving behind, and how I can make them work for me in 2019:

1. Stop Being a Control Freak

It was hard for me to push through and work on my passion because I was trying to accomplish everything through my own will: trying to help my family, trying to be a good employee, trying to be a supportive friend, girlfriend, and daughter. Until I came across one of my devotionals (that are constantly getting me in check) in the Trust, Hustle, Rest series that reminded me that God gives the increase, and then I realized something. I can hustle, hustle, hustle and be the best “everything” in life, but if I don’t trust God and commit my plans to him I will simply be a burnt out mess. It is okay for me to take the time, ANY time I need to put my best foot forward and regroup, especially during a time of mourning. Finally and most importantly, God is the one that opens doors and allows amazing opportunities to fall into my lap. I just have to do the work! When we try to take charge of every aspect of our lives we end up feeling tired, frustrated, and misunderstood.

2. Have Faith

Some people like inspirational quotes from their favorite celebrity, guru, or mogul, I tend to mostly like scriptures. Here are a few scriptures that always encourage me when the going gets tough!

Proverbs 3:5-7

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

And even though this prayer isn’t in the Bible, the Serenity Prayer still serves as a constant reminder of how I should handle every situation in my life. It helps me maintain the balance between working things out personally and learning to let go.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

3.  Learn to Let Go

My last and final thing I learned. I don’t know about you all, but I’m done feeling strained from trying to orchestrate everything perfectly. I’m tired of sleepless nights and frustrated days, tired of letting the ignorance of day to day operations get me down. Tired of worrying about creating that perfect piece of viral content. Tired of trying to do everything on my own. So I’m giving it all up, and I know I’ll have to revisit this blog post in the future to encourage myself again (as we know old habits die hard) but I hope I’m encouraging you all as well. We are all destined to be something great! While I know we can choose to be great at any moment in our lives (not just during the new year) it is always refreshing feeling when the clock strikes 12 and the old year is a thing of the past. However, let’s strive towards greatness everyday and chase those dreams and goals. Also twenty somethings, let’s give ourselves a break. We just became adults like two minutes ago, it’s all new to us. I’m going to stop acting like I know what I’m doing and just do the best I can.

Despite a tragic event happening so early in the year, I am so excited for what God is going to do in my life for my loved ones and I. I plan taking more risks this year, collaborating more, traveling more, and truly enjoying this thing we have call life! You should make it your goal to do the same and find joy in the ordinary. Also, when it comes to resolutions, remember Rome was not built in a day and extend yourself grace. Until next time ladies and gents! Don't forget to let me know your plans for 2019!
