Tips for Surviving Your First NYFW as a Blogger
Spring/Summer 2018 was my very first season at New York Fashion Week as a fashion blogger. It was just as hectic and as amazing as I thought it would be. I didn’t know what to expect my first time around and I wanted to eliminate those feelings for you guys. That is why I put together 11 tips to help you guys survive your first set of NYFW show with confidence and ease!
Plan Your Outfits Ahead of Time
Look at your show invites and plan your outfits out according to the theme or mood. For example, when I attended the Pamela Roland show I knew she was known for designing gorgeous gowns. I decided to wear a long flowy maxi dress. Don’t feel like you have to buy a new wardrobe! Reach out to local boutiques that might let you borrow fresh new pieces and accessories. Overall, planning your outfits out ahead of time ensures that you don’t overpack and reduces unnecessary stress.
Plan Your Hairstyles Ahead of Time
I have kinky-coily curls, which means, I can’t just whip a hairstyle together without running into an issue with heat and humidity. I usually get a protective style like braids or twists, for NYFW that I can easily switch up from day-today. Keep in mind, the less time it takes you to get ready, the better. If you want to have a different look for each day, make a Pinterest board so you know exactly what you’re looking for.
Know Yourself
I love being comfortable. During my time in NYC, I wanted to be as comfortable as possible while working and watching shows. My sneakers came in clutch as a cute pair of shoes that were comfy but didn’t take away from my look. If you don’t want to wear heels, go for your favorite pair of kicks, loafers, or statement flats. When styled correctly, they will make any outfit look just as good!
Network, Network, Network
Networking with other bloggers in your area or niche will make traveling to NYFW a lot easier. I am from NC, and at the time, it was a little difficult for me to team up with other bloggers I knew because most of them weren’t able to go to #NYFW that season. However, I did know a few bloggers from a Facebook group that were attending or lived in NYC. Try to grab a show with someone, or get coffee to see a familiar face. Keep in mind that NYFW is an amazing networking opportunity, so chit chat while you’re in line waiting for your shows. It takes the edge off!
Map out Your Shows and Events
Google Maps is going to be your best friend. Map out your day and take notice of how long it will take to get to each of your destinations. Being fashionably late is cute for your best friends’ party, not so much for #NYFW as shows fill up quickly!
Don’t Shy Away from Public Transit
I originally went to college in an urban setting, pretty close to downtown. It was there that I had to ride my first city bus and learn how to navigate public transportation. Luckily NYC has subways which are honestly the fastest way to get around, depending on where you decide to stay. Learn the subway routes and get comfortable with them as soon as possible and you will never have to worry about your Uber getting stuck in traffic!
Explore the City
As a blogger, you may have a few opportunities to attend various shows from different brands and companies. Create your NYFW schedule wisely. Only attend the events that resonate with the vision of your brand and your blog. Don’t feel pressured to attend every event you’re invited to, especially if you don’t connect with the brand. Exploring the city outside of #NYFW will only make your experience better. There are plenty of museums and restaurants around that you can slip into. So make sure you take the time to slow during these busy fashion-filled days.
Take Care of Yourself
This means hydrating, eating all of your meals and getting a good amount of rest. You will NOT be able to make it through NYFW if you are going to bed at 4 a.m. every night and eating loads of junk food. I actually started a new eating regiment where I eat five times a day. I made sure to pack snacks and buy smoothies in between shows to make sure I fit my meals into my schedule. I also drank water whenever I could. NYC can be strenuous on your body. Make sure you rest!
Do Not Forget Business Cards
Unfortunately, I made this mistake my first time around. However, I was able to get the business cards of other bloggers and photographers that I met. You can also offer to follow your new acquaintance on Instagram as an easy way to keep in touch.
Invest in a Portable Charger
Aside from your phone and camera, a portable charger is a tech must-have during NYFW! I was happy that a portable charger I received from my sister as a Christmas present came in handy. While I did try to keep my phone on low battery mode, the endless snaps, videos, and pictures eventually led to a red zone crisis. My Anker portable charger was a lifesaver!
Don’t Stress and Have Fun
It is so easy to get overwhelmed with the happenings of the city and all the events you will have to attend but remember, it’s journey. You’ll be fine! All of your posts will get written, you’ ll meet new brands, and will hopefully make meaningful connections. Being able to attend NYFW is the official stamp of approval for your blog, but don’t take the fun out of your experience by stressing. Live in the moment and create amazing content!
This is all so true!! Hope you enjoyed fashion week!
